Taming or disguising violence? War, civilisation and social theory

Pages 325-334 | Published online: 11 Jun 2014

Notes

1. In Marquis de Condorcet’s Sketch for a historical picture of the progress of the human spirit (1795) one can find a coherent statement which directly opposes civilisation to war. However, Condorcet does not elaborate extensively on this idea, merely assuming, in a classic example of the Enlightenment spirit that, as civilisation is stretched across the world the institution of warfare will gradually cease to exist.
