Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the circumstances related to body image among adolescent female swimmers. Thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with 11–13 year-old swimmers who trained at USA Swimming clubs. Using grounded theory methodology, a theoretical model consisting of a core category embedded in four themes emerged. Creating Myself included key components of self-presentation, perception and attitude encircled in four contextual themes: The Backdrop (previous thoughts, feelings and experiences), Responses from Others (comments from peers, family and important others), The Swimmer Body (the swim suit, physical traits, mental qualities and beliefs about swimmers’ physiques) and Being and Getting Comfortable (self-observation, current thoughts, feelings and self-management strategies). Implications of the model for research and professional practise were discussed.
