Letter from the Editor

Dear Reader,

In this issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, we are pleased to present 3 articles on Pneumococcal Vaccines: the effect of PCV13 on carriage in healthy children (Mameli, p 811), a review of economic aspects of PCV13 for adults and elderly (Dirmesropian, p 818) and an early study of a 10-valent conjugate vaccine in Japanese children (Iwata, p 826).

In the Cancer section, we present an early trial of a telomerase-based GX301 vaccine (Fenoglio, p 838), and a review on potentiating cell-based immunotherapies (Seledtsov, p 851). We bring an analysis of a Rotavirus vaccination program for infants in Canada (Sanford, p 870) and an analysis of Meningococcal vaccination in a model setting (Izquierdo, p 875).

The Licensed Vaccines section introduces a cost-effectiveness analysis of herpes zoster vaccination in adults >50 years old (Préaud, p 884), a commentary on varicella vaccination strategy (Tafuri, p 897), a Phase 4 study of a recombinant Hepatitis-Hib conjugate vaccine (Dalvi, p 901) and a product review of the HEV 239 hepatitis E vaccine (Li, p 908).

Six papers on Immunotherapy include a report on local nasal immunotherapy for airway inflammation (Yu, p 915), and DC-based vaccine against Parkison's disease (Ugen, p 922), a product review of GI-4000, a ras-targeting pancreatic cancer immunotherapy (Hartley, p 931), and 3 research articles on DNA vaccine against rheumatoid arthritis (Xiao, p 938), effect of mulberry leaf polysaccharides on DC maturation (Xue, p 946), and a study of incidence of EBV and breast cancer in Syrian women (Aboulkassim, p 951).

The Influenza section brings 4 research articles: perception of live vaccines by Canadian providers (Dube, p 956), profiles of vaccine responses in adults 50-74 years of age (Jacobson, p 961), an early trial of live H2N2 vaccine (Isakova-Sivak, p 970), and a Phase 1 trial of a whole inactivated virus vaccine (van Boxtel, p 983).

Among Technology articles, you will find a product review on a novel microneedle for intradermal vaccination (Levin, p 991), characterization of a new human diploid cell line for vaccine production, Walvax-2 (Ma, p 998), and a review on chromatography-based methods for purification and monitoring of viruses and phages (Kramberger, p 1010).

We present a review on clinical trial designs in HIV vaccine research (Richert, p 1022), a short report on the benefits of IL-10 blocking in HIV immunization (Clutton, p 1030), and 2 letters concerning the RV144 clinical trial (Vasan, p 1036, and Shmelkov, p 1038).

In addition to a survey of vaccine Acceptance among expectant mothers (Atkinson, p 1039), we are happy to present 3 research articles on Novel Vaccines: evaluation of preferences regarding leptospirosis vaccine (Arbiol, p 1046), a preclinical study of intranasal RSV vaccine (Gu, p 1057), and identification of novel Acinetobacter baumannii candidate vaccines (Chiang, p 1065).

Finally, we present a letter pointing out the difference between maternal immunization and immunization in pregnancy (Heininger, p 1074).

In our monthly News, Policy and Profiles (NP&P) track we offer a selection of the latest news in the field of vaccines and immunotherapeutics. In this section we also regularly publish opinion pieces on timely, interesting and controversial topics related to vaccines and immunotherapeutics, profiles of companies and organizations, as well as portraits of distinguished scientists in our field.
