Letter from the editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics begins with a Portrait of an ISV Fellow, Dr. Stanley Plotkin (p. 1836).

Next we are happy to present nine papers on Influenza: a review of H3N2 viruses in humans (Allen, p. 1840), an estimate of vaccine coverage in the US Medicare population (Shen, p. 1848), a review of immunogenicity, safety and efficacy of seasonal vaccine in diabetes patients (Dos Santos, p. 1853), a cost-effectiveness analysis of tri- to quadrivalent vaccine transition in the Italian at-risk population (Mennini, p. 1867), a review of cell culture-derived vaccines (Perez-Rubio, p. 1874), examination of a Canadian influenza prevention policy for healthcare workers (McPherson, p. 1883), two retrospective studies on disease burden in Mexico (Cortes-Alcala, p. 1890) and surveillance in Turkey (Meşe, p. 1899), and a commentary on the challenges of conducting a community-based vaccine trial in an Indian rural population (Kumar, p. 1909).

The Pneumococcal section features research articles on cost-effectiveness of PCV in South Korea (Choi, p. 1914), immunogenicity of different regimens for PPV-23 and influenza vaccines in older adults (Nakashima, p. 1923), immunogenicity of re-vaccination with PPV-23 (Kawakami, p. 1931), predicted impact of PCV in Vietnam (Le Polain de Waroux, p. 1939), and injection-site reactions after PCV-13 vaccination (Juergens, p. 1948).

Five research studies on Licensed Vaccines report on the impact of dosing schedules on vaccination programs in the elderly (Matthews, p. 1957), post-licensure safety of the live zoster vaccine in the US (Miller, p. 1963), immunization status of children with chronic neurological diseases (Dinleyici, p. 1970), Phase 3 trial of a second booster dose of an acellular pertussis vaccine combined with reduced antigen-content diphtheria-tetanus toxoid (Choma, p. 1977), and dose-sparing effect of adjuvanted Sabin-inactivated poliovirus vaccine (Li, p. 1987).

Three articles on Immunotherapeutics include an analysis of host genetics in connection with effectiveness of DC-based HIV immunotherapy (Reis, p. 1995), a study of enriched environment’s impact on the mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease (Zhang, p. 2003), and a commentary on IL-22-targeting cancer treatment (Markota, p. 2012).

The HPV section introduces research on correlates of vaccination initiation and completion among young adults (Adjei Boakye, p. 2016) and preclinical development of a new VLP vaccine (Chen, p. 2025), while the Novel Vaccines section presents a review of obstacles to Group A Streptococcal vaccine development with a focus on cryptic epitopes (Ozberk, p. 2034) and a study of α-galactosylceramide in vaccine-induced protection against ricin intoxication (Yates, p. 2053).

Two articles on Public Health feature a systematic review of how parental education affects childhood vaccinations in low- and middle-income countries (Lukusa, p. 2058), and a commentary on a ring vaccination strategy for immunization against cholera (Deen, p. 2069).

Finally, we present a survey of demand for the Meningococcal B vaccine among Italian parents (Giuliani, p. 2075), characterization of serological responses to neonatal Rotavirus RV3-BB vaccine (Cowley, p. 2082), a Safety report on hypersensitivity reactions following vaccination in Australian pre-schoolers (Baxter, p. 2088), and a commentary on long-term immunity against Hepatitis B infection (Osiowy, p. 2093).

Our monthly News, Policy and Profiles (NP&P) track offers a selection of the latest news in the field of vaccines and immunotherapeutics. In this section we also regularly publish opinion pieces on timely, interesting and controversial topics related to vaccines and immunotherapeutics, profiles of companies and organizations, as well as portraits of distinguished scientists in our field. Please contact Acquisitions Editor Adam Weiss ([email protected]) with your ideas for commentaries, opinion pieces, profiles and portraits. Your suggestions for and contributions to our N&P&P track are always welcome!
