Letter from the editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics starts with ten articles on Licensed Vaccines, including research reports on the impact of the aging population on the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases in U.S. (Talbird, p 332), Australian GPs’ views on pertussis vaccination of adults (Bayliss, p 344), a Phase 3 trial of safety and immunogenicity of the purified Vero-cell cultured rabies vaccine (Shen, p 351), anti-varicella antibody levels in Chinese subjects of all age groups (Meng, p 358), concurrent increase of varicella prevalence and poor vaccine compliance in China (Liu, p 363), varicella serostatus in Italian healthcare workers (HCWs) and medical students (Balbi, p 372), decrease in anti-rubella antibody levels between antenatal and postpartum periods in pregnant women (Rasool, p 377), development of an ELISA for determining levels of coxsackievirus A16 vaccine antigen (Cui, p 381), seroprevalence of anti-polio antibodies in response to vaccine change in Beijing (Li, p 389), and a Letter to the Editor on Hib and pneumococcal conjugate vaccination in Malawi (Gadama, p 397).

The Coronavirus section features a review of routine vaccination strategies in the pandemic (Dinleyici, p 400), a survey of willingness to be vaccinated among the Chinese (Yang, p 408), commentaries on vaccine development and use (Rahman, p 414) and use of BCG vaccine for prevention of severe Covid-19 disease (Fedeli, p 416), and a Letter to the Editor on vaccine clinical trials in Nepal (Gupta, p 418).

Five research articles on HPV investigate declining vaccine awareness in U.S. (Chido-Amajuoyi, p 420), disparities of vaccine uptake based on sexual orientation in women (Adjei Boakye, p 428), the association of vaccine status with intention to undergo cervical screening in young women (Kakubari, p 434), impact of an educational intervention on HCWs’ knowledge and attitudes to vaccination (Chen, p 443), and a school-based intervention in Canada (Dubé, p 451).

Four Influenza studies report on determinants of parental vaccine acceptance (Zhao, p 457), keys to acceptance among high-risk groups in Peru (González-Block, p 465), immunogenicity of H5N1 vaccines in the elderly (Zhang, p 475), and immunogenicity of a gamma radiation-inactivated vaccine (Chen, p 485).

The Rotavirus section presents a survey of opinions and attitudes of Italian HCWs to non-compulsory vaccination (Amadori, p 497), a report on vaccine effectiveness and impact in Uzbekistan (Eraliev, p 503), and a study of self-financed vaccine effect on acute pediatric gastroenteritis in Turkey (Gönüllü, p 510).

The segment on Pneumococcal vaccines introduces a study on the effect of PCV on otitis media in children (Edmondson-Jones, p 517), a survey of barriers to vaccination completion among the elderly in Hong Kong (Wang, p 527), and a commentary on the impact of PCV on mortality of children under five (Camargos, p 537).

An Immunotherapy review discusses immune checkpoint inhibitors in glioblastoma (Yang, p 546).

Two short reports on Novel Vaccines include a safety and immunogenicity trial of Sendai virus-based vaccine for human parainfluenza (Scaggs Huang, p 554) and a study on the stabilization of a protective antigen in anthrax vaccine (Ryabchevskaya, p 560).

The Hepatitis B section presents a report on factors associated with reduced vaccine immunogenicity (Yin, p 566), and a Letter to the Editor on the vaccine booster dose in subjects with health conditions (Sticchi, p 575) with an associated Response Letter (Bechini, p 580).

Two articles on Acceptance include a survey of parental vaccine views following a drop in coverage in an Italian region (Brunelli, p 583) and a commentary on medical prctitioners’ attitudes towards the use of a vaccination decision aid (Frawley, p 588).

Finally in this issue we highlight a Public Health report on variation in vaccine coverage in rural China (He, p 592) and a review on the Technology of outer membrane vesicles as vaccines (Rossi, p 601).
