Letter from the editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics begins with seven articles on Immunotherapy, including a review of antigen-specific immunotherapies for renal cell carcinoma (Xu, p 1882), a mini-review of immunotherapeutic approaches to fight Covid-19 (Iqbal Yatoo, p 1897), preclinical studies on the synergistic effects of PD-L1 inhibition and peptide vaccines in melanoma (Ji, p 1910), and tolerance-inducing nanoparticle vaccine for prevention of vitiligo (Zhang, p 1923), two commentaries on the role of cholesterol metabolism on checkpoint inhibition cancer therapy (Bersanelli, p 1930) and on clinical trials testing immune checkpoint inhibition in rare tumors (Mittra, p 1935), and a Letter to the Editor on exacerbation of tuberculosis as an adverse effect of checkpoint inhibition immunotherapy (Kubo, p 1940).

The HPV segment features cost-effectiveness analysis of expanded catch-up vaccination in adults (Daniels, p 1943), assessment of the impact of educational intervention on students’ vaccine knowledge (Berenson, p 1952), a survey among primary-care physicians on vaccine hesitancy and recommendations (Tsui, p 1961), examination of vaccine acceptability among medical students (Farsi, p 1968), a commentary on school-entry requirements (Thompson, p 1975), and immunogenicity and safety trial of HPV-9 in Vietnamese children and young adults (Thiem, p 1980).

The Acceptance section presents studies on practices and perceptions of non-medical exemptions following their ban in California (Holroyd, p 1986), the impact of hesitancy screening on future acceptance (Cunningham, p 1994), trends in the classification of reasons for hesitancy (Kulkarni, p 2001), ethnic determinants of vaccine completion in Nigeria (Afolabi, p 2008), hesitancy among healthcare providers in United Arab Emirates (Elbarazi, p 2018), vaccine misinformation on social media in Poland (Klimiuk, p 2026), and determinants of uptake in HIV-affected families in India (Arya, p 2036).

Fourteen articles on Licensed Vaccines investigate social determinants of herpes zoster vaccine compliance in older adults (Shuovo, p 2043), safety and efficacy of the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine in Asian adults (Kim, p 2050), adjuvant effects of exercise in young people (Lee, p 2058), vaccination practices in children with congenital heart disease in China (Li, p 2065), waning immunity following mumps vaccination (Wang, p 2072), seroprevalence and persistence following measles vaccination and infection in Italy (Bianchi, p 2078), pandemic lessons from measles outbreaks (a commentary by Stein-Zamir, p 2085), safety and efficacy of rabies immunoglobulin in children (Hobart-Porter, p 2090), impact of EV71 vaccination on encephalitis in HFMD patients (Li, p 2097), the validity of test-negative design of EV71 vaccine trials (Zhang, p 2101), immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of 4-valent dengue vaccine (Park, p 2107), surveillance of vaccine-derived polio (Odoom, p 2117), immunogenicity of different polio vaccine regimens (Xu, p 2125), and a Letter to the Editor on the introduction of typhoid vaccine in Pakistan (Aslam, p 2132).

The Clinical segment features a survey of views on vaccinomics following discussion with experts (Gerber, p 2133), evaluation of adverse events following vaccination in national campaigns in Turkey (Şimşek, p 2145), and a commentary on conducting Phase 3 trials in resource-limited settings (Saluja, p 2149).

Five Influenza-related articles review utility of cell-based vaccines in the Islamic world (Zulkarnain, p 2158), and report on the association of previous vaccination with Covid-19 (Green, p 2169), pregnant women’s views of the disease and vaccination (Arriola, p 2176), improved vaccine coverage among Chinese healthcare workers (Yi, p 2185), and the link between vaccine awareness and acceptance in Saudi Arabia (Al Hassan, p 2190).

The Meningococcal section introduces reviews on vaccination in China (Xu, p 2197), immune responses to MenC following 1- and 4-valent vaccination (Serra, p 2205), and vaccination during mass gatherings in India (Dubey, p 2216), and a study on cross-reactivity of MenB-specific antibodies (Fazio, p 2216).

Three Pneumococcal studies report on cost-effectiveness of PCV-13 in US adults (Kobayashi, p 2232) and Chinese young children (Wang, p 2241), and safety and immunogenicity of two novel conjugate vaccines (Fitz-Patrick, p 2249).

The Hepatitis segment includes a report on regional differences in discrimination against disease carriers in rural China (Li, p 2257), a study of determinants of long-term immune protection from HBV (Mastrodomenico, p 2268), and a review of the risk of multiple sclerosis following HBV vaccination (Sestili, p 2273).

The Coronavirus section presents surveys of willingness to receive a Covid-19 vaccine (Chen, p 2279) and the influenza vaccine following the pandemic experience (Zhou, p 2289), and a commentary on the implications of disease spread dynamics on vaccine development (Mosa, p 2293).

Two articles on Rotavirus highlight the development of a live attenuated vaccine for use in LMICs (Kumar, p 2298), and safety and immunogenicity of a novel oral hexavalent vaccine (Wu, p 2311).

Research in Public Health explores the link between the density of vaccine workers and coverage in China (Hu, p 2319), and factors associated with vaccine coverage of one-year-olds in Ethiopia (Biset, p 2326).

Finally, we are happy to introduce a preclinical trial of a Novel Vaccine adjuvant based on straight polyacrylate (Pavot, p).
