HV&I Reviewer Highlight

In the current HV&I Reviewer Highlight we are pleased to recognize Dr. Manuel Colomé and his service to the scientific community.

Dr. Colomé is a specialist in epidemiology and preventive medicine with over 20 years of experience as a physician, academic, and vaccine expert. Currently, he serves as Chief Medical Officer and heads the Epidemiology Department at Dr. Hugo Mendoza Pediatric Hospital. After earning his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the oldest university in the Americas, he pursued further training in Epidemiology and Public Health at Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. He holds a Master’s degree in Bioethics from the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), and two Master’s degrees from San Jorge University: one in Health Sciences Research and another in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Additionally, he has completed numerous trainings and certifications in areas such as field epidemiology, infection prevention and control, outbreak management, vaccinology, project management, and risk communication.

In academia, Dr. Colomé is a Professor at the School of Public Health at UASD, where he also serves as Director of the Health Research Institute. At INTEC, he is a Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, where he founded and coordinated the Master’s program in Public Health. He has co-directed doctoral theses at Rey Juan Carlos University and supervised internships at Alfonso X El Sabio University.

Over the past decade, Dr. Colomé has worked closely with the Dominican Society of Vaccinology and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, generating evidence to help governments make better public health decisions. He authored the first study analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Expanded Program on Immunization in the Dominican Republic. In 2021, he received a “Certificate of Recognition” from the then-Minister of Public Health for his work as a field epidemiologist. In 2023, the Corripio Foundation awarded him the prestigious Natural and Health Sciences Award – Epidemiology Category “for his valuable contributions to the field of epidemiology and the study and diagnosis of infectious diseases.” His research focuses on inequalities in vaccination coverage.

Dr. Colomé has held key positions in public health, including serving as the coordinator of epidemiology for the National Health Service in the Dominican Republic, where he led the initial health service response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also been a consultant for international organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization, the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network. As a researcher, he has published over 53 articles in renowned scientific journals. His current work and research focus on inequalities in childhood vaccination coverage and public trust in vaccines and immunotherapies, with special attention to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr. Colomé is a full member of Sigma Xi, the world’s largest interdisciplinary honor society for scientific research based in the United States, which includes over 200 Nobel laureates among its members. He is also a member of the Dominican Medical Association, a corresponding academic at the Dominican Academy of Medicine, the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, the Dominican Society of Hospital Epidemiology, the Coalition for Vaccination in the Dominican Republic, and the Dominican Association for Pediatric Research, where he serves as president for the 2023-2025 term.
