Abstract

This study explores the issue of premarital sex among the Muslim-dominant societies of Malaysia and Indonesia. Although premarital sex is condemned in both countries, its rate is on the rise. Three hundred and eighty-nine adolescents took part in a survey on their sexual experiences, religiosity, and a few youth cultural elements. The results suggest that there is an erosion of traditional and religious values, and that peers and youth culture play a significant role in influencing adolescents who engage in premarital sex.
