Abstract

The Lithuanian Scientific Society founded in Vilnius in 1907 was the precursor of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences which began its work after the Second World War. This work contains material on naturalists, members of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, who investigated the Lithuanian wildlife. Such prominent scientists as Prof. Povilas Matulionis, Dr. Kazys Grinius, etc. were among the founders of the Society. On the whole, a list of 14 members of the Society is presented with the dates of their entry into the Society, length of their membership and titles of the papers they read. In addition, their short biographies are given, attention being drawn to their activities related to publishing manuals. A great number of manuals and textbooks for schools prepared by Lithuanian naturalists are enumerated. This work also provides information on many difficulties the Society faced during the annexation of Vilnius by Poland. To summarise, the Society trained many prominent scientists whose contribution to the Lithuanian science and culture is of great significance.
