A practical guide on strategic roadmapping for information and operations technology management: a case study on industry 5.0 transformation

ABSTRACT

Strategic roadmapping is in realizing strategic visions and driving transformative agendas, but its methodology remains largely underdeveloped, particularly in the context of information and operations technology management. To address this gap, this study proposes a strategic roadmapping methodology to standardize and enhance its applicability in academia and practice. This methodology offers an approach to develop a strategic roadmap, involving defining the roadmap’s vision and boundaries, identifying critical initiatives, establishing priorities and contextual relationships, and highlighting the importance of continuous monitoring and updating. A case study focusing on Industry 5.0 transformation success is utilized to demonstrate the functionality and implications within the information and operations technology management context. The result allows manufacturers to effectively navigate the complexities and disruptions of Industry 5.0, fulfill its core objectives, and ultimately achieve digitalization success.

Morteza Ghobakhloo is an Associate Professor at the Division of Industrial Engineering and Management, Uppsala University, Sweden, and a collaborator with the IN4ACT project at the School of Economics and Business, Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering. His research interests include the strategic management of digital industrial transformation in the Industry 4.0 era, hyper-connected manufacturing ecosystems, and corporate sustainability performance. His research has been published in many leading journals, such as BSE, IJPR, TFSC, and JCLP.

Mohammad Iranmanesh

Mohammad Iranmanesh is an Associate Professor attached to the La Trobe Business School, La Tobe University. Abderahman Rejeb

Abderahman Rejeb is a doctoral candidate in the field of Management. His research interests include technology applications, supply chain management and logistics, marketing, and tourism. Abderahman was ranked as the second top student in Tunisia for the Baccalaureate in 2013, which entitled him to be awarded the Governor’s Excellence Award and La Banque de la Tunisie’s grant.

Davoud Nikbin is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the School of Business & Law, University of Brighton, UK. He holds a PhD in Services Marketing from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He teaches a wide range of courses in marketing. His research interests are services marketing, consumer behavior, tourism and hospitality marketing, digital marketing and innovation management. Prof. Tseng was a research fellow in the Institute of Applied Ecology at Chinese Academy of Sciences, China (2012-2013); visiting scholar at University of Derby, United Kingdom (2015); Adjunct Distinguished Prof, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia (2019-2023); Honorary Professor, Graduate School of Business, Universiti Sains Malaysia (2019-2024); and Visiting Prof., University of Glasgrow, United Kingdom (2023). Prof Tseng is the Editor in Chief of Journal of Production of Engineering (Taylor & Francis, JIF = 4.5).
