Notes
1. The use of the term “social figure” follows the understanding of Stephan Moebius and Markus Schroer (Citation2010), who define a social figure as a time-dependent historical figure. Social figures are not equated to roles: roles are (in most cases) bounded by a specific social sphere (e.g., father in a family), whereas social figures instead overlap different social spheres. They are also not comparable to professions. A consultant can be a job title, but at the same time consultative actions can be found in fields of economics, science, or religion (Moebius & Schroer, Citation2010, p. 8).
2. In most of the existing literature on the creative sector, the main focus is on the changes in the use of workplaces (e.g., Merkel & Oppen, Citation2013). Empirical academic studies on remote workers who live a location-independent and worldwide mobile life are still needed. The thoughts in this article are based upon a research stay in South-East Asia in summer 2015. Interviews were conducted in several cities with people of different nationalities who use the term digital nomad as a self-description.
3. Aside from restrictions due to visa regulations, which determine authorization for entry into and exit from a country.
