Abstract
In North Africa, Saccocalyx satureioides Coss. et Dur. (Lamiaceae), presents a great demand for culinary and medicinal purposes. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) has been used for the determination of 18 essential, non-essential and toxic elements (As, Ba, Br, Ca, Co, Eu, Fe, K, La, Lu, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Th, Yh and Zn) in this plant, which is very often helpful in biochemical assays and pharmaceutical formulations. The accuracy of the results was evaluated by analyzing the certified reference material GBW 07605 (GSV-4 tea leaves). Ca was the dominant element in studied plant (1.43 %). The K and Fe levels were also relatively high. However, toxic elements in this species were within the safety baseline of all the assayed elements recommended by WHO/FAO. The data presented in this work may be helpful in future medicinal research for the development and synthesis of new drugs.
