Abstract
The present study was designed for the extraction and quantification of α-mangostin from the fruit hull of Garcinia mangostana L. Hull powder was extracted with methanol, yield of extract was quantified (3.72±1.81%). α-mangostin content (36.18±1.06%) of the extract was determined by HPLC. Total phenolic content (186.75±3.39 mg/g GAE) was determined. Free radical scavenging activity of the extract was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay (93.26±0.91%). Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (144±3.6µmol of Trolox equivalent (TE)/g of fresh weight) and total antioxidant capacity of the extract were determined (233.9±7.21 mg Ascorbic acid equivalent/g). Reducing power (1.539±0.030) and metal chelating activity of the extract were also determined (62.67±1.21%). Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory (IC50= 104.72µg/ml) activity of the extract was determined. Results obtained from the present study indicate that Mangosteen is a potential source of natural antioxidant and further it can be exploited for Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity.
