1 It is perhaps worth noting that international distribution channels remain an obstacle to a wider readership: the purchase of collections from the Invisible Borders website is difficult (in my case impossible) for those outside Nigeria, and one of the few works of travel writing by an African woman, Zukiswa Wanner’s Hardly Working, is currently unavailable in the UK and Germany.

Emma Shercliff
Emma Shercliff is a doctoral candidate at the UCL Institute of Education. Her research explores and documents the role of female publishers in shaping the literary landscape in Africa. She has worked in the publishing industry for over 20 years, is a non-executive director of Cassava Republic Press, and the founder of Laxfield Literary Associates.
