Abstract
Little is known about the cultural, social, and familial factors affecting Italian women’s body image during menstruation. This study aimed to understand the socio-cultural influences on menarche and menstruation and the impact on body image and genital hygiene behaviors among Italian women. Researchers conducted 28 interviews with English-speaking women ages 25–60 living in Florence, Italy, who had experienced menstruation or menopause. Results indicated that participants associated menstruation with shame, where they felt different from their peers due to bodily changes, leading to discomfort and negative emotions. Findings highlight menstruation’s impacts on overall health and well-being, including behaviors and feelings.
