1 Recent research has indicated that many individuals with autism spectrum disorder prefer identity first language to describe autism, such as “autistic” (Kenny et al., Citation2016). Therefore, we will use “autistic” in the current article.

2 The bulk of this research reports on the situation in Australia prior to major reform of the system for funding disability support services, the NDIS.
