Introduction

Introduction

The articles in this issue represent a selection of the research presented at the Ninth International Symposium on Digital Ethics organized by the Center for Digital Ethics and Policy at Loyola University Chicago in November 2019. As guest editor, I want to extend my gratitude to the leadership of the Media Ethics Division of AEJMC for its assistance in the selection of the initial proposals.

Deborah L. Dwyer and Chad Painter explore how editorial decision-makers at various news organizations weigh requests to unpublish information against their obligations to document community affairs in the public interest. Their study reveals latent contradictions within the journalistic paradigm that beg to be resolved before consistent guidelines about unpublishing can be developed.

Míriam Díez Bosch, Alba Sabaté Gauxachs and Josep Lluís Micó connect the scholarship on ethical leadership with that on social-cause marketing in their in-depth study of a unique Spanish cooperative. They demonstrate that authentic communication derives from value-driven leadership that permeates the entire organization.

Caitlin Ring Carlson and Luc Cousineau investigate the ethics of “quarantining” controversial subreddits, allowing certain communities to remain online while reducing their exposure on Reddit. The multi-theoretical framework they develop to do so can serve as a tool for content moderators struggling to balance open debate with protecting users from potentially harmful speech.
