ABSTRACT

This paper elucidates the experimental investigation based on the tribological performance of abrasive wear for titanium microparticlereinforced biocompatible grade thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites andits characterization. The biocompatible titanium is used as particulates in the composition of 0, 1, 2, and 4 wt% under the TPU matrix. The effect of filler material on different parameters like weight loss, wear index, specific wear rate, and wear coefficient on abrasive wear performance is evaluated under the study for biomedical implants. The ploughing of particles from the specimen surface shows, the higher wt% of titanium microparticles increases the hardness gradually in all samples. As a result, there is a decrease in wear coefficient, wear index, and specific wear rate from 0 to 2 wt%, but it increases in the sample of 4 wt%, which shows the higher weight loss from the specimen volume concerning the shore hardness of the composite.
