ABSTRACT

In the current study, limit elastic angular speed analysis of porous trigonometric functionally graded porous rotating disks was investigated. The approach used was variational principle, and the solution was achieved using Galerkin’s error minimisation theory. This study aims to analyse the effect of trigonometric grading, aspect ratio, porosity volume fraction and porosity types on disk performance. Four different porosity types which are uniform, symmetric, inner maximum and the outer minimum was considered. The disk profile was taken as uniform, tapered and exponential type. The study yielded a decrease in limit speed as the aspect ratio increases. The porosity volume fraction was found to be a more significant parameter than the aspect ratio. A comparison of limit speeds for porous and non-porous disks was presented and the most significant porosity model type has been identified. With a change in disk profile from uniform thickness disk to exponential varying profile, the performance of rotating disk can be improved to a large extent.
