ABSTRACT

Ultrasonic aided stir casting (UASC) is a manufacturing method for metal matrix composites (MMCs) that uses ultrasonic waves to agitate molten metal during casting. This process significantly improves the dispersion of reinforcement particles within the matrix, enhancing mechanical properties such as strength and toughness. UASC also reduces defects like porosity and inclusions, with ultrasonic energy generating strong localized shear and turbulent flow. This leads to better blending of the constituents, resulting in composites with superior mechanical characteristics and more uniform microstructures. However, the impact of UASC on MMCs’ mechanical properties can vary with process parameters including frequency, amplitude, stirring speed, temperature, and casting rate. Effective regulation and optimization of these factors are essential to achieve optimal mechanical properties. UASC offers significant potential for producing MMCs with enhanced properties, suitable for use in various industrial sectors like aerospace and automotive. Overall, the UASC technique marks a progressive step in MMC manufacturing, aiming to meet high-performance requirements across multiple applications.
