ABSTRACT
This travelogue paper shares some lessons, insights, and unanswered questions from the author’s visits to cities in Europe and Canada that have been leading the way on child-friendly urban planning.

Tim Gill
Tim Gill is a global advocate for children’s outdoor play and mobility. His book No Fear: Growing up in a risk-averse society was published in 2007. He is a Built Environment Enabler for the UK Design Council, and in 2017 was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study child-friendly urban planning. He holds degrees from Oxford University and London University, and an honorary doctorate from Edge Hill University. He is a former director of the Children’s Play Council (now Play England).
