ABSTRACT

The SALUS Healthy Cities Design Congress 2023, saw a panel of industry experts share their views on planning deregulation and the Campaign for Healthy Homes, the panel included: Dr Rosalie Callway, Town and Country Planning Association; Prof Ben Clifford, University College London; Steve Morten, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities; Gwyn Roberts, BRE and Cllr Jane Corbett, Everton. The panel brought perspectives from government, private sector, academia and local government. Whilst views varied about the future of planning and building regulation in England, panellists recognised the value of the Healthy Homes campaign in highlighting how government changes have undermined health and the future delivery of healthy and affordable homes. They touched on many factors, including housing budgets, resource allocation, weak mechanisms of accountability, as well as opportunities for change within the current political climate.
