ABSTRACT
Recent evolutionary economic geography (EEG) studies have argued that regional diversification emerges as a path-dependent process, as a region often branches into related industries, whereas unrelated industries have a high probability of exiting the region. Based on a firm-level dataset of China’s manufacturing industries during 1998–2008, this paper examines the entry and exit of four-digit industries at the prefectural level, and shows that Chinese regional industrial development is a path-dependent process that is also affected by industry characteristics and the institutional framework. The results imply that EEG would profit from incorporating insights on institutional change and industry characteristics in explanations of regional industrial evolution.

转型经济中区域产业动态的重要影响因素. Area Development and Policy. 近期的演化经济学研究强调区域产业发展是路径依赖的，区域倾向于发展与原有产业结构相关的新产业，而和原有产业结构关联度较弱的产业则更可能退出。基于中国1998–2008年的企业数据，本文分析了中国四位数行业市级尺度的产业动态，发现中国的产业发展是路径依赖的，但是同时受到产业特性和制度环境的影响。这也表明演化经济地理学在研究区域发展时应当加入制度变迁和产业特性等视角。
RESUMEN
¿Qué es importante para las dinámicas industriales de ámbito regional en una economía de transición? Area Development and Policy. En recientes estudios sobre la geografía económica evolutiva se argumenta que la diversificación regional surge como un proceso que depende del camino que se siga, puesto que una región se ramifica con frecuencia en industrias asociadas, mientras que las industrias no relacionadas tienen una alta probabilidad de salir de la región. A partir de un grupo de datos sobre empresas de las industrias de manufactura en China entre 1998 y 2008, en este artículo se analiza la entrada y salida de las industrias de 4 dígitos de ámbito provincial, y se muestra que el desarrollo industrial de las regiones chinas es un proceso que depende del camino que se siga y también de las características de la industria y el marco institucional. Los resultados indican que la geografía económica evolutiva se beneficiaría si incorporase las ideas del cambio institucional y las características de la industria en las explicaciones sobre la evolución industrial en las regiones.

Что важно для региональной промышленной динамики в условиях переходной экономики? Area Development and Policy. Недавние исследования в сфере эволюционной экономической географии (ЭЭГ) утверждают, что региональная диверсификация становится зависимой от исторического пути, по мере того как в регионе развиваются смежные отрасли, в то время как несвязанные отрасли имеют высокую вероятность выхода из региона. На основе внутрифирменных данных по китайской обрабатывающей промышленности за 1998–2008 годы, в данной статье рассматривается порядок входа и выхода из 4-значных отраслей на уровне префектур, и показывается, что китайское региональное промышленное развитие – это процесс, зависящий от исторического пути, а также от отраслевых особенностей и институциональных рамок. Результаты предполагают, что ЭЭГ выиграет от интеграции выводов об организационных изменениях и отраслевых особенностей в объяснения региональной промышленной эволюции.
