Economic complexity of Brazilian states in the period 1997–2017

ABSTRACT

Economic complexity (EC) is a proxy for the productive structure of a given geographical space, reflecting the synergy between local productive systems and institutions. This paper examines the evolution of the EC of Brazilian states from 1997 to 2017. The results show that the states with the highest EC are in the Southeast and South regions, and that in some states EC declined or stagnated. These trends are indicative of processes of deindustrialization and financialization and point to the need for a new development path.

1997-2017年巴西的经济复杂性. Area Development and Policy. 经济复杂性（EC）是一个特定地理空间生产结构的代表，反映了当地生产系统和机构之间的相互协同作用。本文对1997–2017年之间巴西各州经济复杂性的发展进行了研究。结果表明，东南部和南部地区是经济复杂性最高的州，而有些州经济复杂性有所下降或停滞。这些趋势表明了去工业化和金融化的进程，并指出需要一条新的发展道路。

RESUMEN

Complejidad económica de los estados Brasileños, 1997–2017. Area Development and Policy. La Complejidad Económica (CE) es una proxy de la estructura productiva de un determinado espacio geográfico, reflejando la sinergia entre las instituciones y las redes productivas locales. Este artículo examina la evolución de la complejidad económica de los estados brasileños de 1997 hasta 2017. Los resultados muestran que los estados con valores más altos de CE están en las regiones Sureste y Sur y que en algunos estados hay un declinio o estagnación de la CE. Esas tendencias son indicativas de los procesos de desindustrialización y financiarización y apuntan para la necesidad de un nuevo camino de desarrollo.

Экономическая сложность штатов Бразилии в период 1997–2017. Area Development and Policy. Экономическая сложность (ЭС) является косвенным показателем производственной структуры географического пространства, отражающим синергию между местными производственными системами и институтами. В данной статье рассматривается эволюция экономической сложности бразильских штатов с 1997 г. по 2017 г. Результаты показывают, что штаты с самым высоким уровнем ЭС находятся в Юго-Восточном и Южном регионах, а в некоторых штатах ЭС снизилась или стагнировала. Эти тенденции свидетельствуют о процессах деиндустриализации и финансиализации и указывают на необходимость нового пути развития.
