INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Selected Studies in Interpersonal Communication

A Typological Approach to Communication in Relationships

Pages 263-275 | Published online: 02 Nov 2017

Abstract

Two studies were conducted to examine the proposed research questions. The first study developed an eight-factor scale, the Relational Dimensions Instrument (RDI), capable of reliably measuring some salient aspects of relational life. The second study derived an empirical typology of relationships based on couples' responses to the RDI. This study also examined the connection between relationship types and perceived communication styles in ongoing relationships. This paper reports the results of the second study and discusses the implications of relationship typologies for communication research.
