Part III: Place, Boundaries, and Exchange in Organizational Communication

A Comprehensive review and Communication research agenda of the Contextualized Workgroup: The Evolution and Future of Leader-Member Exchange, Coworker Exchange, and Team-Member Exchange

, &

Abstract

Although leader-member exchange (LMX), coworker exchange (CWX), and team-member exchange (TMX) serve distinct yet related purposes in workgroups, these relationships remain segregated in scholarship, thus providing an incomplete view of the most prevalent communicative relationships in the workplace. The purpose of this comprehensive review and research agenda is to present the current state of workplace exchange relationships and offer compelling reasoning for why these relationships should be examined in concert. Areas for future scholarship are suggested, including the refinement of epistemological perspectives, replication of studies to explore current contradictions, and need for more multilevel examinations of workgroup relationships.
