Abstract

Cobaloximes of the type [Co(X)(dmgH)2B], where dmgH = Dimethylglyoxime monoanion, X = Cl, Br, SCN and B = 4-Aminophenylacetic acid (4-APAA) and4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA), have been synthesized. Better yield was obtained when bromide ion was used as an axial ligand. The synthesized cobaloximes were characterized by IR, UV spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The structures of the two cobaloximes [Co(Cl)(dmgH)2(4-ABA)] and [Co(Br)(dmgH)2(4-ABA)] have been characterized by X-ray Crystallography. The complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against gram positive Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) MTCC 1430 and gram negative Acinetobacter baumannii MTCC 1425 bacteria using Agar well diffusion method, Tube method and Biofilm eradication on biomaterial methods. It has been found that all the cobaloxime complexes exhibited inhibition against both the test microorganisms. Cobaloximes have been found to be more active against the gram negative bacteria compared to gram positive bacteria.
