Abstract

Metal-organic frameworks are important materials for drug delivery and imaging applications due to their easy surface modifications and porous surfaces. In this work, we used Fe3O4@PAA@MIL-100(Cr) MOF as a carrier of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Visible), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis confirmed the encapsulation of the drug in nanocarrier. The result of this study showed that ciprofloxacin as an antibacterial drug was encapsulated in Fe3O4@PAA@MIL-100(Cr) with a drug loading of 50 wt %. Moreover, drug release was done at pH: 7.4 and pH: 5.5 within 3 days which resulted in about 80% release of the drug at pH: 7.4. In addition, the release analysis based on kinetic equations revealed satisfactory results. The surprising antibacterial activities of Fe3O4@PAA@MIL-100(Cr) and Fe3O4@PAA@MIL-100(Cr)@CIP were tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria via the disk diffusion method.
