Thank you to all those CTS members who attended the Canadian Respiratory Conference in Victoria in early April 2022. After a nearly 3-year hiatus since our last in-person national scientific meeting, it was really good to see colleagues and friends from across the country in a format other than Zoom! No doubt, my pre-pandemic conference ‘fatigue’ had abated during the pandemic, and I was ready and enthusiastic to attend CRC 2022 – but, notwithstanding, I thought that the scientific program was truly outstanding – as good as any other major conference in thoracic/respiratory medicine on offer. For that, I want to thank and acknowledge the Co-Chairs of the Scientific Committee, Drs. Celine Bergeron and Mike Nonoyama, and all of the committee members for making CRC 2022 the success that it was. As we look ahead to Montreal, in 2023, I am delighted that the incoming Co-Chairs of the Scientific Committee for CRC 2023 will be David Gourde and Dr. Larry Lands, and I know that they are already working to put together another fantastic conference. Mark your calendars for April 20-22 for CRC 2023 in Montreal!
Of course, for those of you who were in attendance in Victoria would have heard of Janet Sutherland’s pending retirement in the summer of 2022. Janet has been the Executive Director of the CTS for the past 15 years and, for many of us, she is the only CTS Executive Director we have ever known, and her name is synonymous with the CTS. There were several poignant and heart-felt tributes paid to Janet during the CRC, and I have no doubt that there are still more tributes to come before the end of the summer! As I reflect on Janet’s tenure during her time as the Executive Director of the CTS, it is evident that her contributions in every facet of the job have been immense, and her discretionary efforts in ensuring the sustainability – and now vibrant growth - of our professional organization are immeasurable. Janet, from all of us in your CTS family, we thank you for what you have done for the CTS and wish you a happy and well-deserved retirement!
The ending of one era presents an opportunity to start a new chapter at CTS, and we are thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Executive Director, Cheryl Ripley, effective June 27th, 2022. Cheryl comes to us from the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) where she has served as the Director of Continuing Professional Development. Cheryl brings 12+ years of progressive experience in national non-profit organizations and membership-based medical specialty societies such as COS and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). She holds a Masters’ degree, and has extensive program development and management experience, along with success in developing strategic partnerships and revenue generation. We look forward to welcoming Cheryl to the CTS and there will be a period of overlap with Janet in late June to ensure a smooth transition process.
We also recently welcomed several new members to the CTS Board; Dr. Chris Hergott has taken over from Dr. Patrick Daigneault as Chair of the Education & Continuing Professional Development, Dr. Chris Li has taken over from Dr. John Gjevre as Chair of Membership & Communications, and Dr. David Zielinski is the new Pediatric Assembly Representative on the Board. I look forward to working with these new Board members and thank Patrick and John for their exemplary service on the Board. David, in turn, replaces Dr. Melinda (Mindy) Solomon, who has been elected to the CTS Executive, and I also want to thank Dr. Dina Brooks and Dr. John Granton who have completed their terms on the Executive and Board, respectively. Their wise counsel and mentorship have been invaluable over the past few years.
Finally, we’re planning for the 2022 CHEST Annual Meeting, which will be held in-person in Nashville, Tennessee from October 16-19, 2022. The CTS Scientific Program at CHEST will be held on Monday, October 17. One of the highlights of the CTS Scientific Program is the CTS Honorary Lecture, which honours and recognizes a colleague who has made major contributions to the development of research, education, or clinical excellence in the field of Canadian respiratory medicine. If you have someone in mind for this, or other distinguished CTS awards, please forward their names to me or any member of the Executive or Board. I look forward to seeing many of you in Nashville!
Un hommage et un souhait de bienvenue
Merci à tou-te-s les membres de la SCT qui ont assisté au Congrès canadien sur la santé respiratoire, à Victoria au début d’avril 2022. Après une interruption de près de trois ans depuis notre dernière rencontre scientifique nationale en personne, ce fut un réel plaisir de voir des collègues et des ami-es de partout au pays autrement que dans l’écran de Zoom! Il ne fait aucun doute que la « fatigue » qu’avant la pandémie j’éprouvais à l’égard des conférences s’est atténuée pendant la pandémie: j’étais prêt et enthousiaste à l’idée d’assister au CCSR 2022. Et, sans égard à cet état d’esprit, j’ai trouvé que le programme scientifique était vraiment exceptionnel – aussi bon qu’à n’importe quel autre congrès majeur en médecine thoracique/respiratoire. Pour cela, je tiens à remercier la coprésidente et le coprésident du Comité scientifique, Dre Céline Bergeron et Dr Mike Nonoyama, ainsi que tous ses membres, qui ont fait du CCSR 2022 une telle réussite. Alors que nous nous tournons vers Montréal, en 2023, je suis ravi que les nouveaux coprésidents du Comité scientifique du CCSR 2023 soient David Gourde et Dr Larry Lands, et je sais qu’ils travaillent déjà à l’organisation d’un autre congrès formidable. Marquez vos calendriers du 20 au 22 avril pour le CCSR 2023 à Montréal!
Bien sûr, ceux et celles d’entre vous qui étaient à Victoria ont entendu parler de la retraite imminente de Janet Sutherland au cours de l’été 2022. Janet a été directrice générale de la SCT ces 15 dernières années – pour nombre d’entre nous, c’est la seule directrice générale de la SCT que nous avons connue et son nom est synonyme de la SCT. Plusieurs hommages poignants et sincères ont été rendus à Janet pendant le Congrès et je ne doute pas que d’autres lui seront rendus avant la fin de l’été! Lorsque je réfléchis au mandat de Janet en tant que directrice générale de la SCT, il est évident que ses contributions à toutes les facettes du travail ont été immenses, et que ses efforts discrétionnaires pour assurer la durabilité – et maintenant la croissance dynamique – de notre organisation professionnelle sont incommensurables. Janet, de la part de toute la famille de la SCT, un immense merci pour ce que tu as fait pour l’organisme et nos meilleurs souhaits de retraite heureuse – si bien méritée!
La fin d’une époque est l’occasion d’ouvrir un nouveau chapitre à la SCT: nous sommes ravi-es d’annoncer la nomination de notre nouvelle directrice générale, Cheryl Ripley, qui entrera en poste le 27 juin 2022. Cheryl nous vient de la Société canadienne d’ophtalmologie (SCO) où elle a été directrice du développement professionnel continu. Cheryl possède plus de 12 ans d’expérience progressive au sein d’organismes nationaux sans but lucratif et de sociétés de spécialité médicale basées sur l’adhésion de membres, comme la SCO et la Société des obstétriciens et gynécologues du Canada (SOGC). Elle possède une maîtrise et une vaste expérience de l’élaboration et de la gestion de programmes, et a marqué des réussites dans l’établissement de partenariats stratégiques et la génération de revenus. Nous avons hâte d’accueillir Cheryl à la SCT. Il y aura une période de chevauchement avec Janet à la fin juin pour assurer un processus de transition en douceur.
Nous avons par ailleurs accueilli récemment plusieurs nouveaux membres au conseil d’administration de la SCT: le Dr Chris Hergott a succédé au Dr Patrick Daigneault à la présidence du Comité de l’éducation et du développement professionnel continu; le Dr Chris Li a succédé au Dr John Gjevre à la présidence du Comité de l’adhésion et des communications; et le Dr David Zielinski est le nouveau représentant de l’Assemblée pédiatrique auprès du conseil d’administration. J’ai hâte de travailler avec ces nouveaux membres du conseil et je remercie Patrick et John pour leur service exemplaire au sein du c.a. David, quant à lui, remplace la Dre Melinda (Mindy) Solomon, qui a été élue au Comité exécutif de la SCT, et je tiens également à remercier la Dre Dina Brooks et le Dr John Granton qui ont terminé leurs mandats respectifs à l’exécutif et au c.a. Leurs sages orientations et leur mentorat ont été inestimables au cours des dernières années.
En outre, nous nous préparons à la réunion annuelle CHEST 2022, qui se tiendra en personne à Nashville, au Tennessee, du 16 au 19 octobre 2022. Le Programme scientifique de la SCT au Congrès CHEST sera présenté le lundi 17 octobre. L’un des points forts du Programme scientifique de la SCT est la Conférence honorifique de la SCT, qui reconnaît la contribution majeure d’un-e collègue au développement de la recherche, de l’éducation ou de l’excellence clinique dans le domaine de la médecine respiratoire canadienne. Si vous pensez à quelqu’un pour cette conférence ou tout autre prix de distinction de la SCT, veuillez transmettre son nom à moi ou à tout autre membre du Comité exécutif ou du conseil. J’ai hâte de vous voir en grand nombre à Nashville!
