Lessons Inspired by Picture Books for Primary Grades (AASL Standards-Based Learning)

by Maureen Schlosser and Rebecca Granatini, Chicago, IL, ALA Editions, 2019, 298 pp., US$49.99 (soft cover), ISBN 978-0-8389-1775-6

The American Association for School Librarians (AASL) have developed National School Library standards which provide a framework for teaching and learning. The new standards framework https://standards.aasl.org/comprises six shared Foundations: Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Explore and Engage. Schlosser and Granatini have used this framework as a basis for this book of ready to go Lesson plans for school librarians and teachers, with an emphasis on using picture books for primary grades.

Each lesson is based on one of the four domains from these Standards: Think, Create, Share and Grow. These lessons incorporate a synopsis of each picture book, an objective for the lesson, a suggested duration, a materials list, and anchor charts, exit slips and worksheets tailored for each chosen picture book. Quick tips offering helpful hints and suggestions to consider are placed throughout each lesson. Finally, appendices include rubrics and worksheets for use in conjunction with the lesson plans. A bibliography, list of online resources and index are included.

The book is an excellent learning tool for school librarians and teachers, especially those new to teaching as the plans provide clear examples of lesson plans which can be used as is or adapted for locally published picture books and topical approaches. These ready-made lessons provide ideas and exemplars for working with students within the National School Library standards for guide New teachers as they will learn how to develop lesson plans allowing them to learn based on the principles and requirements of these National School Library Standards. A table at the beginning of each lesson indicates the standards each lesson fulfils.

The book is well placed in the current AASL literature and has wider appeal and applicability to all school librarians, teachers and learners in early childhood and primary education. It brings a practical dimension to the National School Library Standards by providing lessons for classes using picture books from the library. This book is recommended for school librarians, teachers and parents working with children in early childhood and primary education.
