The impacts of crime on health and health services: A literature review

Pages 253-266 | Published online: 14 Jul 2010

Abstract

Crime poses substantial risks to the health of victims and, consequently, generates additional demand for health services. This literature review examines the current state of knowledge and understanding of the impacts of crime on physical and psychological health; responses to the needs of victims by health workers and other professionals; and resulting costs to health services. The review concludes by identifying issues for research, policy and practice.
