Abstract
In these more hopeful days of glasnostand perestroika, Imake a modestproposal: a test-ban treaty, to last, say, five years. During this time, no-one is allowed to categorize their patients according to the definitions provided by any taxonomic test battery or to employ any other “standard definition” of “aphasia”. At the end of the interdicted period, we could then evaluate our success in coming to understand the psychobiology of language. And decide whether to prolong the ban to eternity.
