Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of arousal on the nystagmus response of normal children to vestibular stimulation. Arousal level was manipulated by verbal instruction in 12 subjects (six boys and six girls) during a standard set of sinusoidal angular acceleration stimulation. Electronystagemographic data reflecting the nystagmus response differed significantly during “aroused” and “relaxed” conditions. Implications for the use of nystagmus as a measure of vestibular responsively are discussed.
