ABSTRACT
A new simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method is reported for the determination of palladium(II), based on its catalytic effect on the oxidation of pyrogallol red by periodate in a micellar medium. The decrease in absorbance of pyrogallol red was monitored at 540 nm, and pH 10.1. The various variables affect on sensitivity were studied and optimized and a study of interfering ions was also carried out. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 0.020–1.00 µg/ml Pd(II). The detection limit was 0.018 µg/ml Pd(II). The method was successfully applied to the determination of palladium in three different hydrogenation catalysts. The relative standard deviation of the mean values and the recovery ranged between 2 and 99.0–103%, respectively.
