A MODEL OF COUPLING AMONG APPLIED, SOIL, AND PLANT NUTRIENTS FOR A VEGETABLE CROPFootnote*

Pages 401-408 | Published online: 21 Aug 2006

Abstract

A simple mathematical model is needed to describe response of vegetable crops to applied nutrients. This article presents such a model which has been successfully applied to forage crops. Field data from the literature for potato (Solanum tuberosum) are used to describe the detailed procedures of model analysis. For this case quantitative linkage is shown between applied and soil nutrients as well as between crop and soil nutrients for applied phosphorus (P). Hyperbolic and logistic mathematical functions are used for this purpose. Once the model is calibrated, estimates can be made with a pocket calculator.
