CHANGES IN PHOSPHORUS ADSORPTION IN A PALEXERULT AMENDED WITH LIMESTONE AND/OR GYPSUM

Abstract

The effect of applying limestone and/or gypsum to a Palexerult soil, either alone or in mixtures at rates covering a broad range (1.25–15t ha−1), on phosphorus (P) adsorption was studied. In subsurface horizons, the P adsorption index (Ibw) decreases with increasing soil pH up to 6.0 –6.5, but above 6.5, the trend is reversed. The surface horizon exhibits a similar behavior above pH 6.0; however, Ibw does not vary with pH at lower levels, possibly as a result of mineralization and changes in humic components after treatment. Sulphate and phosphate anions were found to compete for adsorption sites at acid pH in all the samples.
