Michele Staton

Michele Staton, M.S.W., C.S.W., is a project director at the University of Kentucky, Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. She is the study director for two National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded projects, one examining the health service utilization of incarcerated male and female substance abusers and the other investigating Drug Court retention through the implementation of an enhanced employment intervention component. Ms. Staton has published in the area of substance abuse and HIV risk behavior among adolescents. Her research interests include “substance abuse,” prison-based treatment, health service utilization, rural treatment access, and spirituality.

Carl Leukefeld

Carl Leukefeld, D.S.W., is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of Kentucky, and the Director of the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. He has given numerous presentations and written articles focused on treatment, criminal justice, prevention, and AIDS. He has co-edited and written 13 books and monographs, and has over 50 published articles and chapters. He is an editor or consulting editor for four professional journals, including Substance Use and Misuse and has served as a consultant to several international and national organizations including the Council on Europe, World Health Organization, several European countries, U.S. Customs, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, National Institute of Justice, National Institute of Corrections, American Probation and Parole Association, as well as state and local agencies. He is a Kentucky Colonel and is the former Chief Health Services Officer, United Public Health Service.
