Pages 63-82 | Published online: 19 Aug 2006

Abstract

This paper deals with the experiences of the Magnus-Hirschfeld-Gesellschaft—a German non-profit GLBT organization active in the fields of historical and social science research—using the resources of the German government's labor market policy for its own purposes. Originally, the paper was given at a conference on “Lesbische und schwule Lebensweisen. Struktur, Finanzen und Organisation. “Perspektiven für NRW” (Lesbian and Gay Lifestyles. Structure, Financing, and Organizational Prospects for Northrhine-Westphalia) in Essen, Germany, in December 1999.Citation[1] This English version of my paperCitation[2] gives some additional information about the German system of job creation programs that are widely used by non-profit organizations like the Magnus Hirschfeld Society. The paper highlights some of the special problems facing Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender organizations when they apply for German governmental funding (including lack of GLBT administrative infrastructure, limited funding for GLBT efforts, among others).
