Abstract
The Schiff base ligand 2‐[2′‐hydroxysalicylidene‐5′‐(2″‐thiazolylazo)]‐phenol was prepared and characterized. The ligand yields binuclear complexes of the type [ML(H2O)2]2 [H2L = 2‐[2′‐hydroxysalicylidene‐5′‐(2″‐thiazolylazo]phenol, M = Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, IR, electronic spectra and thermal analysis (TGA). The ESR spectra of the Cu(II) complex were studied resulting in g∥ > g⊥ > 2.0023. The N2O2 environment of the metal ion is realized in the complexes by involvement of the −N=N– group in coordination. The magnetic moments and electronic spectra indicate octahedral geometry for the Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes and distorted octahedral geometry for the Cu(II) complex.
