Preliminary Investigations of Two Shipwreck Sites in Cahuita National Park, Costa Rica

Abstract

Recent underwater archaeological investigations in Costa Rica focused on two sites as potential candidates for Danish West Indies slave ships wrecked in 1710. Historical research suggests a landmark wrecking event associated with a large infusion of Africans, many who remained in Central America. This paper is the first interim report of two fieldwork seasons combining field methods, research, and preliminary interpretation of the findings with voyage history. Context within the broader theme of slave‐ship archaeology and Costa Rica Caribbean landscape is addressed. An integral part of the initiative is community memory, stewardship, and education.

Investigaciones preliminares de dos Sitios de Naufragio en el Parque Nacional Cahuita, Costa Rica

Investigaciones arqueológicas subacuáticas recientes en Costa Rica se centraron en dos sitios que son candidatos potenciales a ser identificados como los restos de los barcos esclavistas de la Compañía Danesa de las Indias Occidentales que naufragaron en 1710. La investigación histórica sugiere que estos eventos de naufragio deben ser considerados como un punto de referencia de la amplia infusión de africanos, cuya mayoría permanecieron en América Central. Este artículo es el primer reporte interino de dos temporadas de campaña que han combinado métodos de campo, investigación, e interpretación de los hallazgos a la luz de la historia del viaje. El reporte se enmarca en el contexto más amplio del tema de la arqueología de embarcaciones de esclavos y el paisaje caribeño costarricense. La memoria, la administración y la educación comunitaria, son partes integrales de la iniciativa.

哥斯达黎加最新的水下考古调查集中在两处遗址, 这-个地点很可能是1710年丹属西印度群岛奴隶船沉没处。历史研究表明一次重大的沉船-件与非洲人的大量输入有关, 他-中很多人留在了中美洲。本文是两次田野调查的简报。两次调查将田野方法、研究、对调查结果的初步解读与航行历史相结合, 将其置于奴隶-考古與哥斯达黎加加勒比海洋景观的這一更為廣闊的主-背景下。这-论点不可分割的部分即社區记忆、管理和教育。
