Harbour of Soli‐Pompeiopolis: recent underwater archaeological research

Abstract

Underwater archaeological work at Soli‐Pompeiopolis in 2017 has challenged previously published descriptions of the harbour works. Excavation, sonar survey, and aerial drone survey have provided an asymmetric plan of the harbour moles with an entrance to the east, which reflects local knowledge of the wind and wave conditions. The presence of beachrock blocking the harbour is explained by Beaufort's depiction in 1811–1812 of a defunct sluice, no longer visible on the site.

El Puerto de Soli‐Pompeiopolis: investigación arqueológica subacuática reciente

El trabajo arqueológico subacuático del año 2017 en Soli‐Pompeiopolis ha cuestionado las descripciones previamente publicadas de las obras del puerto. La excavación, la prospección con sonar y la prospección aérea con drone produjeron un plano asimétrico de los diques del puerto con una entrada al este, que refleja el conocimiento local de las condiciones del viento y las olas. La presencia de rocas de playa bloqueando el puerto se explica con la ilustración de una esclusa caída en desuso dibujada por Beaufort en 1811–1812. Este ya no es visible en el sitio.

Özet

2017 senesinde Soli‐Pompeipolis'te gerçekleştirilen sualtı arkeolojisi çalışmaları bu limanla ilgili geçmişte yayınlanmış çalışmalardan daha farklı sonuçlar içermektedir. Kazı çalışmaları, sonar incelemeleri ve drone fotoğrafları liman mendireklerinin doğudan girişli asimetrik bir plana sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu sonuç bölgesel rüzgâr yönleri ve dalga etkisiyle uyumludur. Makalede ayrıca liman girişini kısmen kapatan yalıtaşı setin Beaufort'un 1811–1812 yıllarındaki çiziminde yer alan küçük geçit ile bağlantısı açıklanmıştır.
