Clinical theory at the border(s): Emerging and unintended crossings in the development of clinical theory

Abstract

The author provides some scaffolding for thinking about emerging and unintended integrative developments in clinical theory. The emergent theory to which the author refers works at a different level of theoretical discourse than explicit attempts at comparative translation of psychoanalytic concepts or theories. In contrast, most of the theory that is explored in this paper involves clinical discourse aimed at solving important common clinical problems. The work of a group of authors (Jay Greenberg, John Steiner, Anton Kris, Michael Feldman and Charles Spezzano) is described as simultaneously embedded within a particular orientation while demonstrating a kind of unwitting reach to a broad swathe of analysts. Distinctions are made between this kind of linking of clinical theory versus self‐consciously syncretic and integrative approaches to theory development. The author also discusses the educational implications of this emergent theory for teaching and learning during psychoanalytic training.

Klinische Theorie an den Grenzen

Der Autor formuliert Grundlagen einer Reflexion über integrative Entwicklungen, die in der klinischen Theorie unbeabsichtigt auftauchen. Die emergierende Theorie, auf die er Bezug nimmt, gehört einer anderen Ebene des theoretischen Diskurses an als die expliziten Bemühungen um eine komparative Übersetzung psychoanalytischer Konzepte oder Theorien. Die in diesem Beitrag untersuchte Theorie betrifft in hohem Maß den klinischen Diskurs, der auf die Lösung wichtiger gemeinsamer klinischer Probleme zielt. Die hier beschriebene Arbeit einer Autorengruppe (Jay Greenberg, John Steiner, Anton Kris, Michael Feldman und Charles Spezzano) ist in eine spezifische Orientierung eingebettet, spricht aber dessen ungeachtet breite Analytikerkreise an. El autor provee un andamiaje para pensar acerca de los desarrollos integrativos de la teoría clínica que emergen sin proponérselo. Las teorías emergentes a las que se refiere el autor trabajan en un nivel de discurso teórico que difiere de los intentos de hacer una traducción comparativa explícita de los conceptos o de las teorías psicoanalíticas. Al contrario, la mayoría de las teorías examinadas por el autor se ocupa de un discurso clínico enfocado en la resolución de los problemas clínicos comunes más importantes. Se describe el trabajo de un grupo de autores (Jay Greenberg; John Steiner; Anton Kris; Michael Feldman; y Charles Spezzano) como parte íntegra de una orientación específica, mientras muestra a la vez una especie de extensión no intencional que abarcaría un amplio espectro de analistas. Se diferencia este tip de vinculación de teorías clínicas de los enfoques intencionalmente sincréticos e integrativos en el desarrollo de la teoría. L'auteur de cet article élabore quelques hypothèses pour penser l’émergence au sein de la théorie clinique de développements et de combinaisons inattendues. Le niveau discursif où se situe le point d’émergence d'une théorie de ce type se distingue des tentatives explicites de traduction comparative des concepts ou théories psychanalytiques. La théorie que l'auteur explore dans cet article a trait essentiellement à un discours clinique qui vise à résoudre des problèmes cliniques importants et couramment rencontrés. Le travail d'un groupe d'auteurs (Jay Greenberg, John Steiner, Anton Kris, Michael Feldman et Charles Spezzano) est décrit comme s'inscrivant dans le cadre d'une orientation théorique particulière en même temps qu'il témoigne involontairement d'un élargissement qui pourrait fédérer un grand nombre d'analystes. L'auteur établit une distinction qui oppose ce type de liens inhérents à la théorie clinique aux approches explicitement syncrétiques et intégratrices du développement théorique. L'autore distingue questo tipo di contaminazione della teoria clinica dagli approcci più deliberatamente sincretici e integrativi allo sviluppo teorico. L'autore inoltre discute le implicazioni didattiche di questa teoria emergente, sia per l'insegnamento che per l'apprendimento nel corso della formazione psicoanalitica.
