Unconscious phantasy and its conceptualizations: An attempt at conceptual integration

Abstract

That there is a lack of consensus as to how to decide between competing, at times even contradictory theories, and about how to integrate divergent concepts and theories is well known. In view of this situation, the Committee on Conceptual Integration (2009–2013) developed a method for comparing the different versions of any given concept, together with the underlying theories and fundamental assumptions on which they are based. Only when situated in the same frame of reference do similarities and differences begin to appear in a methodically comprehensible and reproducible form. After having studied the concept of enactment followed by the publication of a paper in this Journal in 2013, we proceeded to analyze the concept of unconscious phantasy while at the same time continuing to improve our method. Unconscious phantasy counts among the central concepts in psychoanalysis. We identified a wide range of definitions along with their various theoretical backgrounds. Our primary concern in the present paper addresses the dimensional analysis of the semantic space occupied by the various conceptualizations. By way of deconstructing the concepts we endeavoured to establish the extent to which the integration of the different conceptualizations of unconscious phantasy might be achieved.

Bekanntermaßen besteht kein Konsens in der Frage, wie zwischen rivalisierenden und manchmal widersprüchlichen Theorien entschieden werden kann und wie divergente Konzepte und Theorien integriert werden künnen. Angesichts dieser Situation hat das IPV‐Komitee für konzeptuelle Integration (2009‐2013) eine Methode entwickelt, die einen Vergleich unterschiedlicher Konzeptfassungen, ihrer zugrundeliegenden Theorien und Grundannahmen ermöglicht. Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede können nur innerhalb eines Bezugsrahmens auf methodisch verständliche und reproduzierbare Weise erfasst werden. Zunächst haben wir das Konzept enactment untersucht und dazu 2013 einen Artikel in dieser Zeitschrift veröffentlicht. Dann begannen wir das Konzept der unbewussten Phantasie zu untersuchen, verbunden mit der Absicht auch unsere Methode zu verbessern. Die unbewusste Phantasie zählt zu den zentralen Konzepten der Psychoanalyse. Wir identifizierten eine große Bandbreite an Definitionen mit jeweils unterschiedlichem theoretischem Hintergrund. In diesem Beitrag konzentrieren wir uns vorrangig auf die dimensionale Analyse des Bedeutungsraums der verschiedenen Konzeptualisierungen. Indem wir die Konzepte dekonstruierten, versuchten wir zu bestimmen, inwieweit es möglich ist, die verschiedenen Konzeptualisierungen der unbewussten Phantasie zu integrieren.

La fantasía inconsciente y sus conceptualizaciones. Un intento de integración conceptual

Se sabe que no hay consenso acerca de cómo elegir entre teorías conflictivas y, a veces, contradictorias, o cómo integrar conceptos y teorías divergentes. Ante esta situación, el Comité de Integración Conceptual de la (2009–2013) elaboró un método para comparar las distintas versiones de cualquier concepto dado y las teorías y presupuestos fundamentales sobre los que se basan. Solo cuando estas versiones se sitúan en un mismo marco de referencia, empiezan a aparecer las semejanzas y diferencias en forma metódicamente comprensible y reproducible. Luego de estudiar el concepto de puesta en acto y publicar un trabajo en esta revista en 2013, procedimos a analizar el concepto de fantasía inconsciente y, a la vez, seguimos mejorando nuestro método. La fantasía inconsciente es uno de los conceptos centrales del psicoanálisis. Identificamos una amplia gama de definiciones junto con distintos marcos teóricos. Nuestra preocupación principal en este trabajo fue el análisis dimensional del espacio semántico ocupado por las distintas conceptualizaciones. Mediante la deconstrucción de los conceptos, nos propusimos establecer hasta qué punto se puede lograr la integración de dichas conceptualizaciones.

Le fantasme inconscient et ses conceptualisations: une tentative d'intégration conceptuelle

Il est bien connu que la manière de trancher entre des théories concurrentes, voire même contradictoires parfois, et la manière d'intégrer des concepts et des théories divergentes, ne font pas l'objet d'un large consensus. Au vu de cette situation, le Comité d'intégration conceptuelle de l’ (2009–2013) a mis au point une méthode pour comparer les différentes versions d'un concept donné ainsi que les théories implicites et les hypothèses de base qui les sous‐tendent. Les similitudes et les différences ne peuvent commencer à apparaître sous une forme méthodiquement compréhensible et reproductible que si, et seulement si, elles se situent dans le même cadre de référence. Après avoir étudié le concept de mise en acte et publié un article à ce sujet dans l’, en 2013, nous avons entrepris d'analyser le concept de fantasme inconscient tout en continuant d'améliorer notre méthode. Le fantasme inconscient compte parmi les concepts fondamentaux en psychanalyse. Nous avons identifié un large éventail de définitions en même temps que leurs divers contextes théoriques. Notre principal souci dans le présent article a trait à l'analyse dimensionnelle de l'espace sémantique occupé par les diverses conceptualisations. En déconstruisant les concepts, nous nous sommes efforcés d’établir le point à atteindre pour que l'intégration des différentes conceptualisations du fantasme inconscient soit rendue possible.

E’ risaputo che esiste una mancanza di consenso su come decidere tra teorie concorrenti, a volte persino contraddittorie, e su come integrare concetti e teorie divergenti. A fronte di questa situazione, il Comitato di Integrazione Concettuale dell’ (2009–2013) ha sviluppato un metodo per comparare le diverse versioni di un dato concetto, insieme alle teorie e agli assunti che ne stanno alla base. Solo quando vengono collocate nello stesso quadro di riferimento, le similarità e le differenze cominciano ad apparire in una forma metodologicamente comprensibile e riproducibile. Dopo aver studiato il concetto di enactment e avervi fatto seguito con una pubblicazione in questo stesso giornale nel 2013, abbiamo analizzato il concetto di fantasma inconscio, continuando, contestualmente, a migliorare il nostro metodo. Quello di fantasma inconscio è uno dei concetti chiave della psicoanalisi. Abbiamo identificato un largo spettro di definizioni, insieme alla loro provenienza teorica. Nel presente articolo il nostro interesse primario è quello di affrontare l'analisi dimensionale dello spazio semantico occupato dalle varie concettualizzazioni. Attraverso la decostruzione dei concetti, abbiamo cercato di stabilire in quale misura sia possibile raggiungere un'integrazione delle diverse concettualizzazioni di fantasma inconscio.

For the most part, we use ‘phantasy’ in our arguments.
