We also reviewed recent issues of a range of journals on pedagogy (most of which have started over the last 15 years): Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy; Journal of Education for Teaching: International Research and Pedagogy; Pedagogies: An International Journal; Pedagogy; Radical Pedagogy; Pedagogy, Culture & Society; International Journal of Pedagogies and Learning; and others.

David Hamilton is currently in the Department of Pedagogy at Umeå University in Sweden. He has spent most of his career in the United Kingdom (at posts in the Scottish Council for Research in Education, Glasgow University, Liverpool University). He thus offers a perspective that draws on his British roots and his study of European scholarship.

Hamilton (Citation) also quotes the current definition of pedagogy from the Oxford English Dictionary: “the art, occupation, or practice of teaching. Also: the theory or principles of education; a method of teaching based on such theory” (p. 6).

The Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) is the largest ever educational research program in the United Kingdom. Supported through Higher Education Funding Council of England, the TLRP received over 43 million pounds between 1999 and 2012 for over 100 investments (e.g., research projects, fellowships, research networks). For further information, see the TLRP Web site: http://www.tlrp.org/. From this programme of research, the TLRP also generated 10 principles for effective pedagogy. See James and Pollard (Citation).

“Tact” and “Tone” capture the kind of pedagogical meaningfulness that van Manen advocates in two of his two books: The Tact of Teaching: The Meaning of Pedagogical Thoughtfulness (Citation) and The Tone of Teaching: The Language of Pedagogy (Citation), texts that have been required reading in numerous teacher education programs.

Of the over 500 entries in the Encyclopedia of Curriculum Studies, there are seven entries with “pedagogy” in the title: “Critical Pedagogy,” “Curriculum and Pedagogy Conference,” “Diversity Pedagogy,” “Ecopedagogy,” “Pedagogy,” “Pedagogics,” and “Public Pedagogy.” There are four entries with “Instruction” in the title: “Computer‐Assisted Instruction,” “Curriculum Studies in Relation to the Field of Instruction,” “Instruction as a Field of Study,” and “Instructional Design.” There are four entries with Teaching or a teaching‐related term in the title: “Best Practices,” “Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue,” “Project Method,” and “Unit Teaching.” One entry is entitled, “Diadactics—Didaktik—Didactique.”

Allan Luke has spent most of his academic career in Australia, initially as Professor at James Cook University, later as Dean of Education at the University of Queensland, and currently as Research Professor of the Faculty of Education at Queensland University of Technology. However, between 2003 and 2005, he was Dean of the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice at the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. It was during this time in Singapore when Pedagogies: An International Journal was developed.
