A PHILOSOPHICAL DICHOTOMY IN MIGRATION RESEARCH

 

Development of a paradigm for migration is hindered partly because present modes of explanation are entangled within a web of assumptions emanating from two different research philosophies: an objective philosophy and a cognitive philosophy. The ways that each philosophy influences the selection of independent variables are discussed and a case is made for a philosophical synthesis.
