CREEKS, RUNS, AND HOLLOWS

Pages 361-365 | Published online: 15 Mar 2010

Three samples of twenty drainage basins were analyzed to test the hypothesis that the generic terms “creeks,'’“runs,'’and “hollows'’connote streams of different size and velocity. Analysis of variance and Scheffé's test indicate the validity of a perceptual hierarchy among generics. It is suggested that other hierarchies may exist among geographically named features.
