Dartmouth Revisited

Pages 344-352 | Received 10 Apr 2007, Published online: 15 Apr 2021

Abstract

As Dartmouth has been the only wreck of a man‐of‐war from the 17th century to have been published in a preliminary report, it has long been the benchmark wreck for this period. Since the date of the publication, however, research has uncovered information that was not available at the time and which may shed additional light on this interesting ship. This paper aims to contribute to our understanding of Dartmouth's construction and her place as a typical small cruiser of the mid‐17th century.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the anonymous referee for the generous comments and for bringing Dr Martin's updated article to my attention. When I wrote the original version of this paper, the 1998 article was not available to me. My deepest gratitude goes to Dr Fred Hocker of the Vasa Museum, who took the time from his busy schedule to read and comment on the paper. His comments undoubtedly made this a better paper. Also, I would like to thank Dr John McManamon for reading an early draft and for his comments.
