The role of contrast sensitivity charts and contrast letter charts in clinical practice

Abstract

Practitioners frequently make clinical decisions based on changes in visual acuity. However, acuity is recognised to be only one aspect of visual performance. In recent years, a number of clinical chart‐based tests which measure different aspects of vision based on contrast sensitivity have become available. These tests allow a more subtle investigation of visual problems. In this review of currently available contrast sensitivity charts and contrast letter charts, we examine their clinical application and some of the problems which may be encountered in the use of these tests in practice. This should permit a better understanding of some patients' visual problems, better clinical decision making and a better understanding of studies which report visual performance measurements.
