Notes

1. Peter Gould married Johanna Stuyck in July 1956. They raised three children: Katherine, Richard, and Andrew. Their first grandchild, Parker Hansen Gould, was born in 2002.

2. I have been greatly helped by Peter's wife, Jo, and by Roger Downs, chairman of the Penn State Geography Department. The source of personal and academic information about Peter Gould comes from his curriculum vita, the standard reference sources, three autobiographical notes in which Peter reflects on various periods in his life (1982b; 1985a, 345–47; and 1999a, 1–36), and his 1971 interview with Wesley Dow in the “Geographers on Film” series (now deposited at Michigan State University Library). Many of Peter's friends and colleagues have also been kind enough to share with me their reflections on his life. 3. This made him 66 days older than I. This temporal advantage he mercilessly exploited over decades of correspondence by often starting his letters “Dear Peter the Younger” (even “Dear Kiddo,” when he was in an impossibly bouncy mood) and signing off grandly as “Peter the Elder.”

4. Peter later recalled his debt to Tiebout in “August Lösch as a child of his time” (1986b).

6. John Short recalls a letter from Peter on one of his manuscripts which was “thirty pages long, one of those rare reviews which was critical and generous, expansive and funny, beautifully crafted and full of good advice and scintillating insights” (John Short to PH, 26 September 2002).
