1 We define a “classic” essay review as “a critical engagement with a publication or resource published between 1970 and 2010.” The publication could be a single-authored or co-authored book, an edited book or handbook, a report, a chapter, a special issue of a journal, or an article that the review author considers “among the most important in the wider field of curriculum studies or among the most influential writings in a particular area of interest.”
2 CitationSchubert (e.g.,1982, 1986) has contributed numerous synopses of the field of curriculum studies. His co-authored book, Curriculum Books: The First Hundred Years. Second Edition (CitationSchubert, Lopez Schubert, Thomas, & Carroll, 2002), is an excellent register and historical analysis of the changing issues and directions in the field, as reflected in the books published in each decade.
3 The historical account in this editorial essay is at best a “snapshot” of key events or moments in the story of the journal. A more comprehensive and in-depth intellectual history of the journal is needed to fully appreciate both the development of the journal and its role in the evolution of the field.
